This fantastic golf course opened for play in January 1995,
and has quickly become one of the most favored in Orlando by
both residents and tourists. Designed by legendary Joe Lee, the
Diamondback Golf Club is scarier by name than by difficulty,
but it certainly does not qualify as a “resort” course.
Diamondback was cut out of 240-acres of virgin forest (composed
of pine and oak trees) and the terrain surrounding the golf course
is not where you want your ball to land. The undulating fairways
are a bit tight, and strategic bunker features that force players
to be highly accurate on the tee box and with long irons surround
most of them.
One of the truly wonderful aspects of playing Diamondback Golf
Club is the serene setting- you will not find homes or roads
on or near this facility. A great deal of care was taken not
to disturb the natural uplands, water areas, and dense forests
separating the fairways, and this theme is evident from the 1st
tee box to the 18th green. Furthermore, water hazards only come
into play on a few holes.
There are eighty-plus large sand bunkers on the fairways and
around the large, undulating greens. As mentioned earlier, accuracy
off the tee is stressed because of the small landing areas in
the fairways. This is especially noted on the signature 10th
hole, which is a short (but difficult) par-5 that plays 541 yards.
This hole is a dogleg left with water in play on your second
and third shots and sand bunkers on the right side of the green.
It is intimidating, and can simply ruin your fantastic front
nine if you do not focus on this hole. If you hit the water on
the second (or third) shot, crack-open a beer and enjoy this
dynamic environment.
